The author writes well with a clear, clean style and the characters are very interesting. I really enjoyed the fact that the main character was retired, (teachers retire pretty young, *coff*) because it gave the book a fun, being-on-vacation feel. I have read one other book by this author and will definitely search for more. There was plenty of romantic intrigue as usual. I actually was happy to read a book without any rapes, serial killers or dismemberment for a change. Books, even romances seem to be getting a bit over-the-top with violence and tragedy lately and this didn't leave me depressed when I finished the book for a change. I hope Mr. Stanley keeps writing as I am a big new fan. I think most authors write within the depth of their own socioeconomic experiences so you can't ask more than that. This book gave an interesting view of what life in Montreal, Canada is like and gave a really interesting recipe for upside down coconut cake as well. Gotta try that! ;) The other book by this author I have read and liked so far was "All The Way Dead" All The Way Deadwhich involves an anthropologist who lives in West Hollywood, which was a fun mix. Hollywood needs anthropoligists. It was a brilliant concept. I would like to buy this in paperback.

another yeoman like good read by Stanley. He continues the Jesse Ashworth series of murder and misadventure along with unexpected surprises. This novel finds him in Montreal flirting with a local RCMP in the course of murder(s) that happens to one of the principals in the cooking school he is attending. Jesse takes us on a culinary travelogue thru Montreal and tells us about the beauty of Montreal.
I've loved everything I've read by this author, this book included. One of the best features is the progression of Jesse's life from book to book. He's always doing something new with new people. Thus, you get many of the best parts of the initial book in a series, such as character development, in all of the books of the series, this one included. I loved this one and look forward to more from this author.
Jesse goes to Montreal and murder follows. Fun to see him in a new location, cooking and solving crimes. Keeps you interested and ready for the next one.
Always twists and turns. I love the misdirection at times. It fun it keeps you interested and guessing. I also like the characters and how they continue to grow. I really think he is one of the better writers of fun mystery stories. I can’t wait to start the next book.
An interesting story, but this is a mystery which is told to the reader and not one which invites the reader to get involved and find the solution. Instead of "this email I found says yadda-yadda-yadda" the story has "this email has the answer I needed". The reader doesn't know what was in the email so the reader can't participate. In many respects the story is told quite simply.

The book also is peppered with misspellings and wrong homonyms. It is obvious there was no editor.
I really enjoy this series. Jesse and Tim are so down-to-earth, and it's lovely to be able to read a book in the genre with mature, well-balanced characters. It was rather fun how all of Jesse's friends managed to come up to Montreal to visit for a few days, so we were treated to all of the old and familiar characters. Jesse is on vacation in Montreal, taking both a cooking (as if he needed that) and French class, and a murder or two keeps him from being bored. Enter a hot looking Montreal detective to spice things up. The mystery itself had me going, especially when Tim noticed a certain name kept popping up. A very enjoyable read with a surprise ending, not in the mystery, but something in Jesse's personal life. The usual addition of Jesse's recipes at the end of the book is always an added delight.
I love this series - the characters are wonderful. I was a little concerned when I saw that this did not take place in Bath, but the author did a great job of incorporating the locals to Montreal. The two new characters, who I expect to see again, were integrated pretty seemlessly.

The mystery itself was probably the most compelling of the series.

The thing I like best about this series (among so many things) is that the author does not use graphic sex scenes to get the point across regarding the main character's relationship. Too often, authors in this genre will stop the action to get into great detail with a whole other type of action.

I appreciate the continuity of the story and the last scene brought it all together, reminding me why I like the Bath gang.

PS - It's also great that these are mature characters having a fun and interesting life.
