I read this series nearly 30 years ago as a young Navy man overseas. My fond memories of the series inspired me to look in used book stores for copies over the last year with no success. Why I never searched Amazon, I don't know. However in May 2013 at an event a vendor had used books. There lay Damiano and Raphael in pristine paperbacks (just as I had them those years ago). I immediately bought them, fearing I would not find them again and checked Amazon for Damiano's Lute. I found this edition of the three and purchased it to have the series in it's entirety.

I have not re-read it yet, but I do remember that the characters were very well written in that I really cared about what happened next. I enjoyed the setting of the books and the attention to enough detail without going overboard to create the beginning of the image that I could envision while reading.

I look forward to reading the series again and recommend this to any who enjoy a fantasy series that is readable, interesting, and will engage your emotions on many levels.

Trio for Lute RA Macavoy 9780553274806 Books Reviews

This volume is an omnibus of R A Macavoy's gorgeous trilogy Damiano, Damiano's Lute and Raphael.
Damiano is a renaissance witch (although a Christian - magic use is hereditary in his family, and he fears that he is automatically damned). He uses his powers to grant speech to his Dog Macchiato (Spot)and to call an angel, Raphael, who gives him music lessons on the lute. At least, that is how the story begins. War comes to his sleepy Italian town, and drives him out into the world, which is rather ill prepared for.
The story is written freshly and the characters are all real and well rounded out.
The Black Dragon (from "tea with the...") also makes a nice cameo appearance in the third part in his dragon form.
I think the reason Roberta MacAvoy's Damiano novels are not better known is that they are so hard to classify. Is the Damiano trilogy collected in this volume ("Damiano," "Damiano's Lute" and "Raphael") an alternate history of a time when the pope was exiled in Avignon, and the Black Death and the condottiere made life miserable, brutish, and short for almost everyone else?

Is it the story of a witch who wanted to be a musician, and his little talking dog?

Is it the tale of a struggle between two brothers, who happen to be the Seraph, Raphael and Lucifer, Prince of Darkness?

MacAvoy has a way of bringing me into every scene, using precise language and memorable detail. If history is fair to fantasy authors, Damanio and his lute and his little, talking dog will outlast all of the overblown 'ologies' of Brooks, Goodkind, and Stephen King.
I hated the title "A Trio for Lute" - it didn't make sense to me (and still doesn't) and I didn't know the individual books - had the three-book volume for some years before I opened it up, because the title and the picture just didn't appeal. Then I read it, maybe eight or ten years ago (that is, before this review), and memory of it still pleases - it popped into my head, and I searched for it and found it and felt I should post a review. Creation of an alternate reality is very difficult. Once in a great while an author is able to craft a new reality. This author painted with words a most compelling place different from ours but very believable.

I was truly taken by this work to a different, beautiful place that I was sad to leave. Angels and eternal souls and heaven certainly exist there. And dogs really do seem to make the best of friends.
Great book
loved it just as much the 2nd time through, and all 3 sections in one cover.
Love the story - lots to ponder about our relationship with God. Book was in condition expected, which was good.
