In 1917, silent film director Louis Feuillade and writer Arthur Bernède created the character of a mysterious avenger, wearing a slouch hat and a dark cloak -- Judex! His name means "Judge," and he has sworn to mercilessly punish criminals! Judex appears and disappears like a living shadow. Trained by the vindictive Woman in Black, he is a master of disguise and an excellent fighter. His loyal followers include a female athlete, a reformed ex-convict and a pack of vicious bloodhounds. Beneath the ruins of a castle is his secret lair, where he interrogates his prisoners through a "television" screen. His nemesis is Favraux, a corrupt banker who has left a trail of ruin and misery in his wake. In this epic saga, Judex not only challenges Favraux, but also the evil Diana Monti, Favraux's fiancée who is as ruthless and powerful as he is. But as our hero struggles against the villains, he falls in love with Favraux's daughter, the beautiful, innocent Jacqueline...

For those not aware, in 1917, a French silent movie serial was created staring a mysterious avenger named "Judex". A master of disguise who wore a slouch hat and dark cloak, fighting against evil with the aid of several assistants, he seems an early version of The Shadow. And some have used him to create new stories that are Shadow-like (and hints of him being an ancestor or even predecessor of The Shadow). The movie serial is available on DVD, and a novelization was written in France shortly after the serial came out. Here, then, is an adaptation of that novelization, with several fixes to it, in part due to the serialization of the novelization.

Having read the new Judex stories, I didn't know what to expect. I think if you aren't coming into this as a Judex 'fan', you may be disappointed.

Everything I had read indicated that the main villain of the story was the corrupt banker Favraux. But in the story, he is quickly taken care of and imprisoned by Judex. The main villain is actually Diana Monti, Favraux's would-be fiancee, with designs on his money. She tries to bump off Favraux's daughter, now under Judex's protection, and when she learns that Favraux is alive, plots to free him to regain his wealth.

In addition are several other characters. There is the comic relief characters of Concanti, the would-be detective, and the street urchin The Licorice Kid. We also learn of Judex's origin and who the mysterious "Woman in Black" who trained him is, and the reason for his mission of justice.

Probably the biggest problems with the novel is the dialogue of the book, which I don't blame Rich Lai for. I just have a hard time accepting that people spoke and acted this way, but it could be the sign of that times it came from. Lai would have had to do more work to make the novel be more modern to today's audience.

A nice touch was to include the covers of the 12 part serialization, which uses photos of the serial actors, plus the 2 authors, on the covers. I would have liked to have seen a list as to who was who. I know who Judex, Jeannot and the Licorice Kid where, but not the others until I looked them up.

The book is rounded off with a couple of good articles by Lai, one on the problems with the novelization, and the other on the possibility of Judex inspiring the Shadow. Since Lai is himself a Shadow expert, he speaks with some authority.

One issue was that someone needs to do a better job of proofing. I saw several misspelling and bad punctuation.

There was a second serial and a novelization of it. I do hope that this novelization is also adapted and published by Black Coat Press.
