When I began reading this book, I was a little overwhelmed with the tragic misfortune, but I soon realized it was a tale told with good humor and a strong measure of wisdom. The characters are tapped and ultimately come alive with their quirks and strengths, interacting with such natural but intriguing and heartwarming behaviors.
The maternal character, Mamta, issues a type of knowledge that is refreshingly realistic, and shares much of it with her daughters and husband, for example, “Enduring was one thing but making a cult of it was poisonous.” Ravi, her husband and the main character, brought such warmth and apparently uncommon appreciation of his wife that the reader falls in love with his strength and individuality, goatherd or not.
I think my favorite character, and in some ways the hero of the story, is the hospital doctor, who looks out for the relatively poor family and makes sure they receive good care, and then later, corrects a situation in which they were cheated.
As fortune starts to turn for Ravi’s family, he is treated in a Bombay hospital, by another good-natured doctor, a surgeon called Dr. Chitale. One of my favorite quotations, “Dr Chitale didn’t ask, seeing unusual things in India was the norm and having a goatherd change into an ATM dispensing cash in his hospital bed was just another one of those things,” give a good idea of the light-hearted and embracing narrative of Oh Laxmi by Catherine Forsayeth.
I confess to getting a little lost with the names, as they are mostly unfamiliar to me as a Western reader, and I like to be able to pronounce the names, but that is not an author failing, just a need for broadening of the reader. While the presentation was patchy, with assorted mechanical issues, I can’t lower my rating from a 5 because the strength of the overall gift of the story was so great.

Ravi isn't the richest man, or the most fortunate (he is blind in one eye after all), but he has found a great deal of contentment in his life. His work as a goat farmer is going well, his two daughters are set for university and marriage, and he has genuine love for his wife, he was arranged to wed many years before. That is until one day, a seemingly innocuous event changes everything. A giant seed pod of the Moringa tree hits him in his good eye. His screams of pain and the unfortunate passing of a motorbike cause his goats to scatter and flee. The man on the motorbike comes to his aid, and they set off for help, but Ravi's bad luck is not over yet. What will the future hold for his family?

'Oh Laxmi!' by Catherine Forsayeth is wonderfully descriptive, you do become engrossed with the world she has created. I felt a part of the journey that Ravi takes, both literally and in his own development. I love this book and would recommend it to all fans of contemporary fiction.
A heartbreaking disaster of a well told, wit included, good story. Oh Laxmi! By Catherine Forsayeth. Readers will become engulfed by seemingly tragic yet a comedic approach, to a fictitious world built through the eyes of a true storyteller. It promises, wisdom, insight, tragedy, and bit of snarky nuance. This is a story you will not want to put down, but when you do, you might just have to pick it right back up. A good read, from a great writer. As a Contemporary fictional story, this is a book to hold onto. Looking forward to future writings.
The writing isn’t without flaw, but it’s well worth the read.

The story follows Ravi and his family during his constant venture to provide and stay strong. Tragedy soon strikes and Ravi is thrown into a series of circumstances that he works to make the best of. Each character is described well, and has their own unique personas that lend themselves well to the story. Forsayeth does a good job of tying in the characters to tragedy, and making them believable despite circumstances that would hinder most. Finding the best in bad situations, and being happy with what life gives you is a major part of this story. There are some pretty great lines in the text, as well, that really show off Forsayeth’s creativity with writing.

The story is definitely worth your time, and it wont waste what you’ve given it.
Oh Laxmi! by Catherine Forsayeth is a gem of a little book. We follow the seemingly simple life of Ravi, a goat herder who wants nothing more than a good life for his family. He has a lovely and devoted wife, and two daughters. Initially, the author gives a short overview of Ravi's earlier life as a young man and then on to his subsequent marriage. However, the main action of the story takes place as Ravi is having a typical day, herding his goats, when a series of most unseemly events befall him. First he is injured when a giant seed pod hits him in his only good eye, and from there he is blinded. With the aid of a passerby he is taken to a hospital, but again, events just don't seem to go his way. This is a wondrous and inexplicable journey not only for Ravi, as he grows as a man and character, but for the reader as well. Forsayeth has created a beautiful and compelling world for the reader, as we learn Ravi's fate. Highly recommend for a treasure of a book.
