Ascend is an amazing ending to a wonderful series! Wendy has stepped up to her role as future queen, and is trying to make her people's lives better. However, it's nearing her 18th birthday, her wedding, and an attack promised by her father. Wendy has a lot on her mind in this book, and while she's struggling to balance it all, I found she was doing the best she could. Besides the fate of her kingdom, there's also the issue of her love life. Wendy has a very supportive fiance (who may or may not be interested in girls), the duty bound Finn, and the charming, enemy, Loki.

Can I just say how much I love Loki?! Ever since he appeared in the previous book, he has charmed his way into my heart. I absolutely adore him, and he seems to really care for Wendy. He's also hilarious, even in the most dire of times. There's an especially awesome scene where all 3 of Wendy's young men are in her wedding chamber. I won't spoil anything, but the awkwardness levels were extreme!

To me, this was the best of the trilogy. There were plenty of laughs (mostly thanks to Loki), heartfelt moments, action, heart ache, and some slightly steamy romance! While I'm sad Wendy's story is over, I think this was the perfect ending.

Ascend A Trylle Novel Amanda Hocking Books Reviews

Hocking's trilogy (because you can't stop after the first one) is a refreshing deviation from the typical YA paranormal stuff yet also left me unsatisfied.

I liked the premise, and I generally liked the characters. Wendy is a strong, powerful, and beautiful young woman, but she isn't a Mary-Sue. Nothing is just solved for her, and she works pretty hard to accomplish what she wants. She has a determined character that I like, and she doesn't let men solve her problems.

I liked most of the other characters, except Elora - Wendy's mother the queen. I just couldn't warm up to her in spite of the way she changed. She just didn't really fit.

I liked the romance angle, another departure from the typical.SPOILER ALERT I really liked that Wendy did not end up with Finn, the broader. She was a much better fit with Loki.

But, despite the things I liked, there was something about this trilogy that left me unsatisfied. I can't quite place what it was, but something about the trilogy reads as a bit unfinished. There wasn't quite enough history of the Trylle presented to make the alternate a reality. Hocking needed to flesh out the history and explain the politics better & earlier.

My Review - Warning! Contains Spoilers
This series has been out for quite a while so I feel comfortable delving into the spoilers in my review. It's also difficult to avoid when reviewing the third book in a trilogy. Without spoilers, there isn't much to say besides, "I enjoyed it, huh-huh, huh-huh."

Soooooooooooo. Back to the adventures of our fearless Wendy. I'll admit that I took a peek at review teasers when I bought this off , and as is commongwith a "Book 3," it seemed like a love it or hate it response. I happen to come out on the "enjoyed it very much' end of things. It was a pretty fast read, with only a few areas that dragged. There were some surprises and some "expecteds" that were nonetheless satisfying.

I think that I like the character that Wendy became, in the end. I loved her sort of naive ferocity in Torn, so I could see people feeling like this Wendy is less powerful, but Hocking sold me on the opposite. She's more powerful. She gains maturity slowly. The only thing that is weird is that she keeps offering herself and being told, "No," and then when she actually does offer herself, it just doesn't go the way I expected. That whole thing is a little weird, the barter with Oren. But it gives Wendy and Loki critical "alone time," shows Wendy's bravery and sacrifice, and buys time for the build-up to the finale.

I have to admit that I believe a lot of the "haters" for this book felt the way they did because of the way she resolved the love triangle. That is the risk of a love triangle in the first place, I guess. I can see why people would be attached to Finn, but I'm totally am on-board with Hocking's choice. She showed Loki making personal sacrifices for Wendy too (not just Finn). While Finn, who claimed to have feelings for her, always put decorum first...except when he wanted a one-night nookie option. Interestingly, she doesn't offer this to Finn and does insist upon it with Loki and you think, "Huh?" But you realize eventually that Finn was the crush and Loki's the love. Because he's a fish-out-of-water like her, but also a leader. Could this be trying too hard? Maybe. But I wouldn't say it was my biggest drawback in the book.

Some things Hocking did really "subtly" didn't need to be IMHO. For example, Tove and Markis Bain. Duh. But she never really tells you that, which is cute, but kind of unnecessary. Also Mia-and-child as eventual partners for Finn. As soon as the Mia character arrived, I thought, "Ah, that takes care of the Finn problem."

But I think a lot of readers LOVED Finn and his uprightness...like Mr. Darcy. It might seem like Wendy chose Mr. Wickham, a bit. But she didn't. Loki was serious, in the end.

I do have to say in all honesty that I personally found the final battle scene with Oren a bit anti-climactic. That was the biggest drawback in the book for me. It seemed like after all this build-up, and the guy being portrayed like the devil himself, it would have been harder to kill him. Also, I was expecting more of an overall BATTLE scene. For example, the scene at Wendy's christening was awesome. I would have liked the final battle to be more like that.

My final verdict on this was that I enjoyed the series, and I enjoyed this installment.

I think that a lot of the negative reviews could have been squashed if there'd been more development of the Loki story line, and the fact that Finn was choosing duty over love, and was that really love at all--- or was that simply lust. I believe that the library scene proved that what Finn had going on was lust and not lasting love. Ditch the library scene alone and the Loki story line becomes even more believable.

The writing was good enough that I could tell that Wendy and Loki had an attraction/connection from the dungeon scene and on. They played well together. Loki said to Wendy more than once that he wanted her to come with him because she wanted to. I kept waiting for him to interrupt the wedding. I do agree with others that the adultery that took place was not needed. We had made it that far into the series without a true sex scene it could have waited til they said I do and it would have been that much more beautiful. Yeah- and then have Tove carry them breakfast in bed the next morning- complete with mimosas.

In all- 4 stars for the series. I enjoyed it a lot. I Love Loki and as I already said- I would have loved to have seen more of his story developed.
