Ordinary People Judith Guest Books Reviews
I have not seen the movie but truly enjoyed the book. Very touching and brought tears to my eyes. Not certain that this was an ordinary family or "Ordinary People" especially the mother. It was very difficult for me to understand her or the way she reacted to her family.
A story about a family living through several devastating losses. A golden child dies, the surviving son punishes himself at every opportunity, a mother can’t talk about what happened and refuses to grieve, and a father tries to keep everything together. This is a tale about what happens when a family stops communicating and the deadly and tragic consequences take over until there is nothing left.
I recently finished this book and was very impressed with it. A beautiful story, from start to finish, along with amazing characters. The movie is very close to the novel in form - which is a huge compliment. Don't pass this one up!
I purchased this book because I am currently reading all the books the movies I enjoyed are based on. I liked the book, but not as well as the movie, which is usually not the case for me. I feel that there were choices made in the movie which added impact and defined the mother's character. In the book she has more shades of gray, which in its own way is good but it was hard to see how she impacted Con's life as well as you can see it in the movie. That said, the movie followed the book very accurately, with just a few changes as is necessary for the medium. I recommend reading this book, but also see the movie.
Really enjoyed it. I read it on the early eighties. I'd forgotten much of the story. A lot of people claim the mother is a villan. The problem is in the writing. The story is narrated by the father and the son. The mother is never completely explained.
This an excellent exploration into doing everything right and it not being enough. Where do we find hope? "... the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor riches to the intelligent; but time and chance happen to them all. For no one can anticipate the time of disaster. Like fish caught in a net so mortals are snared at a time of calamity, when it suddenly falls upon them." This quote from the ancient book of Ecclesiastes sums up Ordinary People.
The book was not my kind of genre and I was assigned to read it for a literature class, and although it is not the style of book that I normally enjoy reading, the book was very well written and the characters are deep. The book will keep you engaged and it really takes you inside the setting of a family dealing with emotional distress and showcases the emotions and feeling of the characters extremely well.
I saw the movie before I read this, and both are amazing! I think the author captures the feelings of depression surprisingly accurately. The run-on thoughts, constantly reassuring oneself that they need to stay in control or to stop worrying so much, and all the indecision....I can say, from experience, that it is pretty accurate.
The parents are also written very well. You teeter between hating them (mainly the mom) and trying to understand them the whole book, and that's basically how it's supposed to happen, I assume.
It's compelling, heartbreaking, and even humorous, all wrapped in one. It really is great. Highly recommended!!!
