Prepare to use your brain in a created universe of complex characters,A city combining Dicken's England,Elizabethean England, the Roman Empire, and magic that is vivid and real.Lots of esoteric terms that the author doesn't define ? Figure them out,it's part of the challenge,Get thrown directly into intrigue, betrayal, heartbreak, misery, and adventure. This is a novel where every word, every situation, every hint means something that will be explored ultimately. There are 2 protagonists whose point of view is addressed in first person in alternating narratives.Mildmay the scarred thief who spends his life in a brutal underworld is more sympathetic and more of a familiar character from fantasy,a cat burglar and former killer just trying to earn a dishonest living but with his own nobility and rules.
Felix is the character many seem to have a problem with and he is definately flawed and hard to like.he is selfish,a liar, catty, petty, and gay.Gay,gay, gay in every way.Flamingly queer. He is also a survivor of savage abuse and degradation since a child, another reject from society passing himself off as nobility and trapped in a plot to destroy Melusine. There is a plethora of graphic gay sex;those of delicate sensibilities should avoid this book.

This is one of the most stunningly original books I've ever read. I even had to struggle a bit to understand what was going on at first, but it was worth the effort. I didn't even entirely realize just how MUCH happens in this book until incidents were referred to in later books, it is just packed with lots of fascinating events. Lots of danger, lots of action. So imaginative, it's not quite like anything else I've ever read. Amazing book, it's in my top 5. I enjoyed the entire series as well (although I thought the 3rd book was too slow, but for others that seems to be their favorite in the series anyway).
*Spoilers* Trigger warning- this book has a sexual assault near the beginning, but unfortunately it's necessary to the plot. That section can be skipped without really missing anything, it's only important to know that it occurred and what happened because of it. Also, one of the main characters (Felix) is gay, so this series isn't going to appeal to people who are uncomfortable with that, there are some detailed descriptions of sexual encounters in all 4 books.
This book has an immersive, complex world supported by a great deal of creative language development. I really enjoyed her use of invented idiom to support the environment.
But of the two main characters/narrators, only one is developed at all. You can't make a character out of victimhood, and she failed to develop any motivations other than victimhood in Felix- everything he does is apparently part of a massive PTSD flashback and he has no free will until maybe the last chapter. Mildmay is more complex and interesting, but Felix is simply an abused manchild that nobody likes.
I can't even figure out if she was going for sympathy because the level to which she made every character other than Felix and Mildmay completely lacking in empathy tilted the whole story. Even the characters who were seemingly not intended to be monsters lapsed randomly into bizarrely monstrous behavior. This is illustrated even in the ending, in which she switches things up and makes Mildmay the victim. There is apparently nobody in her world who isn't willing to torture and traumatize people out of either malice or apathy. Characters presented as sympathetic don't stay that way. In one chapter, a character named Gideon goes to great lengths to be supportive of Felix, for example, and in the next chapter he turns cruel.
And the story starts with a scene in which Felix is traumatized by someone and inexplicably devolves into self destruction. Because she didn't develop any motivation in Felix outside the label of "traumatized person," the reader is left to guess about everything. Why did he run back to his abusive former master? Why did he turn on his lover of 5 years? We don't know enough about the character at that point to guess, but even though he is a narrator he doesn't give us any hints other than self-loathing. And that self loathing remains really the only consistent character trait through the book. It isn't enough.
There are so few well written and edited fantasies out there with LGBT main characters that are not specifically about sexuality (this story doesn't revolve around for romance and sex at all, it's secondary). I wondered why this one didn't make it to , but now I'm not shocked. This is 300 pages of repetitive whining. Every Felix chapter basically reads "I am surrounded by monsters. They all hate me. I can't tell anybody anything about myself because I'm buried in shame." And while there is a curse involved, that doesn't add interest to the character.
