I've gone through the series in order fairly quickly and I've ordered the next one, but I think it's time to take a break before reading about Jane again. The inconsistencies and unbelievable bits can only be ignored for a certain amount of time before they get annoying. How can Jane Whitefield live openly, under her own name, plus have people from all over the country find her for help, but the bad guys hardly ever do?

I love a good revenge fantasy. Super powers are nice to have. However, at some point reality starts to nag.

Read these and enjoy, but like any guilty pleasure you may become sated.

Yes, this is a different Jane Whitefield than we have known, but I think it's because she's sadder, wiser and maturing

-- Sadder because she loves her husband, Carey, but he worries and is unhappy about the danger she's in when she helps runners,
-- Wiser because she's realized that the enemies of the people she's helped over the years also became her enemies, there's a lot of them who'd like to get their hands on her as well as their victims, and continuing to try to live as a "rabbit" while they're looking for her is equivalent to burying her head in the sand while the wolf is sniffing her out, and
-- Maturing because she's older, married, and has even more experience in this underground world than ever before. There's a weariness in this story that I don't remember in his previous Jane Whitefield novels, which I think is due to the fact that she's so torn. She'd like to settle down with Carey and have a quiet life, but she just can't live with the death of a victim on her conscience, so she feels she has no choice but to continue helping runners. Also, it was obvious in this story that she had finally realized she could no longer just try to hide from or outrun her enemies, so she had to deal with those after her in a way that was very distasteful to her.

It was another great Jane Whitefield story, but the ending seemed a little abrupt, and I would have liked to know more about the runners she was helping and to have had that part of the story wrapped up a little better. Hence 4 stars instead of 5. However, I found myself worrying a little about her future and wondering what "long fuse" she might have lit, which are signs of a good story.
I love Thomas Perry and especially the Jane Whitefield series. This is the most recent book in the series and I have delayed reading it two years because I don't know when the next one is coming out. The read was worth the wait!

Once again Jane, is called upon to make someone disappear. This time it is James Shelby, who has been framed by his wife's murder. It is not enough that James has been sentenced to life in prison, his wife's murder wants him dead. Jane stages a daring courthouse rescue. Shelby gets away but Jane is unwittingly captured by those who want to see James dead. Jane has never suffered at the hands of a captor as she does in this novel. There are times when you almost think that she is not going to escape because the circumstances are just that dire. Yet, you can't quite believe that thisis the end for Jane because she ALWAYS comes through. And she does! Despite her injuries, and they are serious, her cunning and resourcefulness are always present. Before all is said and done, Jane assists, James, his sister, and Iris, a woman who has escaped her abusive husband, and insists upon leaving with Jane when they meet in a shelter for abused woman (you have to read the book to appreciate this connection)in disappearing.

Jane brings killing to a new level. In the past, she had killed only in self-defense. This time she kills for self preservation and the body count is the highest we have ever seen. The book grabs your attention from the outset and continues. I have to admit that there were a couple of times when I had to put the book down because the excitement/suspense was just a little too intense. But after a few moments, I picked it up again because I had find out what happened next!

On the home front, Jane and Carey are trying to have a baby and while there is nothing wrong physically with either one of them, they have yet to conceive. It seems that this last trip has taken something out of Carey and one wonders how many more times can Jane put her life on the line for others before Carey walks away; especially if a child is in the mix.
I am a devoted Jane Whitefield fan. I can re-read the books and find new enjoyment as I slow down and not race to see what she will do next. This book seems to have lost all that defines her. I found it to be so out of character and incongruous that it was hard to read and not at all like the luciously crafted 0300 page-turners of the past. I don't know where Perry is going with Jane. Perhaps he is ready to end the series. Perhaps slip-ups and ludicrous out-of-character choices are showing us she is over the life she has led and she will retire or lose. I'd prefer such a strong clever incredible female protagonist to have her series end far better. If you have not read any of the series, please do not start with this book!
