I read this shortly after reading Michele Sinclair's "Christmas Knight" (same title, different author) and actually think Sinclair's was better but this one has merit. This one tells of 13th century Scottish knight, Ronan MacLeod, who is back from the Crusades and looking forward to being at home in the Highlands at Glenbrae. But before much can happen, he time travels to 1998 at the behest of three apparent witches who think he's a proper match for the new owner of Glenbrae, an Ameican named Hope O'Hara. Hope has seen tragedy in her life and is now without family and barely making it on her inheritance that she has used to make Glenbrae House a Highland historic inn. Ronan arrives in a storm to save her life and the chemistry is instant between them. But Ronan is afraid to let his love for Hope take him where he wants to go because he may be snatched back 700 years at any time. The whole tale takes place at Glenbrae around Christmas. It's a charming story with some bad guys and a ghost that make it interesting though sometimes I did think it lagged a bit, was repetitive and sufficiently vague in places that I had to read the passage more than once to figure out what exactly was going on. Still, it's a good story and if you're looking for an endearing Christmas romance, this might be for you!

Hope O'Hara, felt connected to Glenbrae House the moment she spotted it and with an inheritance received from her beloved uncle, the very last relative she had. The connection with something, anything, would be welcome to take away the pain of loneliness. This 13th century manor would take an enormous amount of money to make it into the prosperous B&B she had envisioned - more than even she had anticipated without paying guests to help get her established. As the tax man starts breathing down her neck, what Hope needed, was a Knight in Shining Armour, and Ronan MacLeod was just what the doctor ordered. Oh, did I say doctor? What I meant was the three Wishwell sisters who seemed to have a hand in conjuring up this 13th century warrior.
Ronan MacLeod, a fierce warrior, had been granted Glenbrae House, by King Edward for his deeds and he wanted nothing more than to forget, the horrors and nightmares of the battles he had fought, and the murders he had committed for this hated English King. Finally, dead inside, he would have a home - long in coming but not for very long in keeping as he was thrust into the 21st century to save a damsel in distress.
From the moment he caught Hope in his arms, as she fell from the roof of Glenbrae House, feelings he had never experienced before rose to the surface. He had enjoyed women, purely as a means to satisfy an itch - but never before was his heart caught up in his chest where he actually felt something for a woman. But here, this strong woman, dressed strangely, and with shorn hair aroused all his feelings of lust and protectiveness. But how could Hope believe this man was from the 13th century, even if he did come dressed in realistic Armour and riding a great war horse? How could she possibly trust him with her heart - he had to be an actor or something to explain his appearance.
Ronan, on the other hand, could believe - Glenbrae House was his home, the same but different. He could see he was in the future but his honor would keep him from his feelings for Hope knowing that at any moment he could be thrust back into his own time. He had been brought here because Hope was in danger and needed protection - but who would protect him from losing his heart?
I am a Christina Skye `Draycott Abbey' fan, and anyone who has read any of the Draycott Abbey books know how spell binding they can be. While the Christmas Knight does not take place at Draycott Abbey, characters from the Abbey do come to Glenbrae including Adrien and his cat Gideon. Yet, you will find Glenbrae House has a charm of it's own as the talented Ms. Skye introduces you to even more enjoyable characters including three delightful witchy type sisters. It is a great book to be reading at this time of the year as you can enjoy the magic here as well as into the Christmas season. I can definitely recommend this book.
I will admit, at first, I wasn't that drawn into 'Christmas Knight'. Unlike the other Draycott stories, this one was set in the small Scottish village of Glenbrae for 99% of the story. Only at the very end did the characters visit Draycott Abbey. It's different from the premise of her other Draycott stories. We don't have a back story where in the past in another life, the lovers were torn apart, finally to be reunited in the present day. It would be hard to accomplish that as Ronan McLeod is from the past, the 13th c. to be exact and thrust by magic to present day Scotland.

We also don't have characters that are very successful and at the top of their field. Sorry, but it's tiring to read about a heroine who in her early twenties is already world class expert on something, or have a hero who is the best body guard or is the best at anything he does. Don't get me wrong. I love all the Draycott stories, but the majority of them follow the same formula and premise - wealthy, handsome, honorable, tough as nails but with a heart of gold Alpha male meets and falls in love with a drop-dead, gorgeous twenty something female who is a world class expert on wine, on paintings, on textiles... etc. In this story, Hope isn't rich. In fact she is struggling financially throughout most of the story. And all Ronan has is the armor on his back, his sword, his horse, and a few coins and trinkets. It was a nice change to read something different.

Here, Ronan is a hard, battle weary knight, returned from the crusades to finally settle in the house and lands bequeathed to him by the hated English king he was forced to serve. Instead of finding peace, he time travels to the future and meets Hope the new owner of his house in 1998. Sparks fly, tempers flare, and love blooms between these two strong minded people. Throw in a mystery surrounding several unexplained thefts in the small village, a parrot quoting strange Shakesperian type phrases, and three magical sisters or Sidhe, who seemed far older than what they appear, and who decide to play matchmaker between Hope and Ronan.

I love the three Wishwell sisters. They remind me of the three fairies from Disney's Sleeping Beauty. They have magic but they are not all powerful and are no match for Adrian Draycott, the ghost of Draycott Abbey. Still, they are delightfully nosey and interfering.
